Crimea Global 2025 Conference: Ukraine Highlights the Role of Its Agricultural Sector in Global South Food Security
18.11.2025 | 11:30 | Section for Public and Mass Media RelationsOn 17 November, Kyiv hosted the third international conference “Crimea Global: Understanding Ukraine Through the South” under the theme “We Hold On and Speak Honestly.” The event was organized by the Crimea Platform Office, the ZMINA Human Rights Center, and the Media Initiative for Human Rights.
Crimea Global is one of the key platforms dedicated to strengthening Ukraine’s relations with countries in Asia, Africa, South and Latin America, and to discussing Ukraine’s role in global security and in responding to the consequences of Russian aggression. These regions – the countries of the Global South – are increasingly influential in shaping the global political agenda, ensuring food security, and countering the impacts of Russia’s war.
The conference brought together government officials, experts and journalists from more than ten countries, including the Democratic Republic of Congo, Kenya, Brazil, Mexico, India and Malaysia.
The Ministry of Economy, Environment and Agriculture of Ukraine was represented by Deputy Minister Taras Vysotskyi, who took part in a panel discussion on expanding economic cooperation with the Global South.
“Ukraine is no longer only ‘the breadbasket of Europe’ – today we are a key pillar of global food security and a reliable partner for the Global South. Despite the war, missile attacks, and Russia’s attempts to block our exports, we have supplied 66 million tonnes of grain worth over USD 13 billion to Asia, Africa and Latin America since 2022. More than 40% of Ukraine’s grain exports now go to this region.
At the same time, Ukraine is moving from exporting raw materials to creating joint solutions in processing, logistics, green energy and digital technologies. Our goal is long-term and equitable partnerships that strengthen the resilience of both Ukraine and our international partners,” – emphasized Taras Vysotskyi.
He also noted that Ukraine’s largest agri-trade partners include China, Egypt, Indonesia, Algeria and Tunisia.
Countries in Asia, Africa and Latin America are strategically important markets for Ukrainian agricultural products and critical partners for strengthening global food security. Cooperation with the Global South also plays an essential political role – from supporting Ukraine in international fora to countering Russian disinformation and building a broad coalition against Russian aggression.
Deepening engagement with these countries gives Ukraine the opportunity to:
• contribute significantly to combating hunger and enhancing the resilience of global food systems;
• increase exports of value-added agricultural products;
• attract investment in logistics, agro-processing and innovative technologies;
• build partnerships for sustainable agriculture, irrigation development and land restoration.
The conference reaffirmed Ukraine’s expanding role in Asia, Africa and Latin America and strengthened the foundation for deeper economic and political dialogue. Participants highlighted that enhancing cooperation between Ukraine and the countries of the Global South opens new opportunities for developing trade, investment and humanitarian ties.
